Maytag Neptune Dryer Repair - How to

Loretta is at it again... She recently contacted me about her MDE4000 dryer that was starting to get louder when it was running. You might recall that I came to her aid in 2006 when her Q6 triac and R11 resistor was damaged when the door latch wax motor failed on her MAH4000AWW. That repair created the Maytag Neptune Q6 R11 repair kit with wax motor.

If you own a Maytag Neptune front load washer with a timer knob (non digital) then you need to be aware of the faulty door latch wax motor issue...

Here is a video that shows how to inspect your door latch on the stand alone Neptunes... Note: The Stackers are not difficult to check either.

If you discover that you have the brownish color actuator tip then you can order a new wax motor at Neptune Help. Keep in mind both wax motor designs has the brownish color body, just the actuator tips are different. You want the black actuator tip.

If you don't replace your brown tipped wax motor it will eventually short out which will damage your machine control board. The Q6 triac and R11 will fail and the door will not lock which prevents the spin cycle from happening. You can prevent this failure by replacing your original wax motor.

I recently worked on an GE Advantium 120 microwave convection oven for a friend. The symptoms were that there was no heat in both microwave and convection modes. Everything else seemed to work. My friend replaced the relay board thinking that was causing the problem. After taking the unit apart it turned out that the 2 relays that control the magnatron and the heaters were not energizing. I took a chance and ordered the WB27X10858 logic board and it is now working.

MAH3000 Maytag Neptune pump question

MAH3000 Maytag Neptune pump question.

Hi. I have a Maytag Neptune washer that seems to go through the whole cycle just fine, except for the fact that the water doesn't drain out. It happened to me awhile ago and someone told me I was using too much soap. I cut down on soap and everything did work great for several months, but now it is worse than ever.

Already Tried: running the rinse cycle again, which worked in the past, but not anymore

Answer:

You have a problem with the pump, either something has gotten into it and is blocking the water flow or the pump itself is bad or the water discharge path is clogged.

See Neptune disassembly photos or videos at Neptune Help. The pump is powered from a set of timer contacts and if you rotate the timer knob you should find spots where there should be 120 VAC on the pump electrical terminals.

If the machine is full of water and you have a floor drain nearby you can lay down the drain hose and gravity will allow the water to drain from machine (unless the water path is clogged with lint or debris).

Once the water is out you can remove the pump and take the cover off of it to inspect it for any lint and debris that could keep the impeller from spinning or the motor could be bad.

To order a new pump simply enter your model number into the Appliance Parts Search box on this blog or at Neptune Help. This tool will give you exploded views and prices of all the parts in your machine and you can simply order new parts and repair your Neptune yourself and save lots of cash.

Don't forget... The MAH3000's as well as any Maytag Neptune front loader with a timer knob has the faulty door latch wax motor. If your MAH3000 serial number starts with 10 - 25 you have 2 more wax motors in the soap dispenser that should be replaced as well before they fail.

The faulty wax motors have the brownish color actuator tip.

The residential models are MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5500A and the 2000 stackers. The digital machines do not have the wax motor issue.

You can order new wax motors from Neptune help.

Below is the new style with the black actuator tip.

Another item I can help you with is your Neptune bearings. If you notice your machine transforming into a jet engine when it starts to ramp up then it is time for new bearings and seal. If you bother the repairman they will kindly ask you for $900 which includes replacing your large outer tub. Don't do it! You can replace your bearings yourself for a lot less.

You can also rent a special tool kit that includes a step by step DVD that shows you how to do it.

Maytag Neptune Bearing 12002022 Revised Seal Install How-To for solid door Neptune front loaders

Hi Neptuner!

I have to say that I am impressed… I asked a Neptuner to shoot his Neptune… oops, I meant shoot some video when replacing the revised lip seal on a Maytag Neptune front load washer and Jeff C. stepped up and sealed the deal!

Here is the video I put together from Jeff’s footage he shot after replacing his (MAH5500B series) Neptune bearings and 12002022 seal kit. It shows the revised lip seal installation. Jeff also purchased a new Neptune Spinner Support for his machine. If you purchase a Neptune bearing and seal kit from me and buy the new spinner support I will refund $40 when you send the 12002022 seal kit back. The new spinner support comes with a revised seal kit. This will offset your spinner support payment by $40!

If you’re not aware… The Neptune 12002022 seal kit includes 2 seals so it will work on both spinner support designs. The thinner seal is the earlier seal and should be used if your machine had the white plastic spacer ("a" clip) between the front bearing and seal. That video is here. The thicker seal is the revised lip seal.

Note: When installing the revised lip seal make sure that the ribs are towards the front bearing and the smooth section will be towards the stainless steel tub so it is not in backwards.

Ok... I may be ahead of the curve here but I just added the MAH6700 bearing and seal kit to my Neptune Bearing order form. It will just be a matter of time before this model needs bearings and the seal replaced so you can save a ton of money by doing it yourself.

This is an off topic post today...

I received an email saying that the month of July 2011 has '5 fridays 5 saturdays and 5 sundays' in it and that this only occurs every 823 years?

Let's break down the calendar shall we...

Let’s think about this, a year can only start on one of seven days, so there are seven possible basic calendar years. Add leap years, and there are fourteen basic calendars. Period. And one of those calendars only gets used every 823 years? How would that be possible? It’s not of course, all fourteen calendars get cycled through regularly, in fact 2010 used the exact same calendar as 1999.

So there you have it... Yes, there will be 5 fridays 5 saturdays and 5 sundays in July 2011...

Carbon-monoxide Poisoning Can Be Prevented...

I just heard on the news recently that another local family was poisoned by carbon-monoxide due to a faulty furnace and the outcome was tragic for one of the victims... This is terrible news!

Listen up... If you don't have a carbon-monoxide (CO) detector in your residence and you have appliances that burn fuel you need to invest in one now! CO is an orderless and tasteless gas so you cannot sense its presence.

Here are some home appliances that can burn fuel:

Fireplace (gas log)

Here is a Maytag Neptune Spinner Support question that I received lately...

"I have a spinner support with a broken bolt stud. Can you replace the bolt studs in the spinner support, or do you have to replace the entire spinner support? If I have to replace the spinner support, do you have them and what does it cost? I will also replace the bearing and seal when I fix the spinner support."

A: I've had Neptuners successfully replace a broken stud on the spinner supports. You will want stainless steel replacement hardware. Sometimes the end of the spinner support arm corroded away and the spinner support needed replaced. You can order a new Neptune spinner support at w10181639.com. Note: I have a photo of a brand spankin' new spinner support above...

In addition, the new spinner support comes with the revised lip seal, too. So if you're replacing your bearings you can get a $40 refund if you purchased bearings from Neptune Bearing or even rented the Neptune bearing tool kit which almost pays for half of the new spinner support! Please don't open the 12002022 seal kit... just send it back for your $40 refund...

I saved another Maytag Neptune front loader from the No-Spin firing squad...

Yes, this Neptune suffered the door latch wax motor failure and would not spin so it was saved by replacing the R11 resistor and Q6 triac on the machine control board to get it up and spinning again. To date I've sold over 5,300 120025235 wax motors! I'm sure that there are thousands more Neptune’s out there just waiting to fail.

Nickelback concert in Columbus, Ohio Review October 1, 2010

Hi Neptuners!

I wanted to share a review I did for the Nickelback concert I went to Friday, October 1st, here in Columbus, Ohio's Nationwide Arena.

I will say that Nickelback rocked and officially brought in Rocktober! If you plan to go to a Nickelback concert in your neck of the woods and don't want the show spoiled then I would not read the review... In your case, it was a great show!

Here is the review I supplied to Ticketmaster...

The Nickelback show started off with a bang! Literally and they had many more tricks up their sleeve... The lighting and pyro were awesome as was the sound quality. The bass drums were cranked up to the max for the whole show so you could feel them like standing in front of your own personal subwoofer! Nice!

They had flame throwers spewing out fire balls in circular patterns and even colored pink and blue flame throwers that would make Rambo jealous. Near the end of the show there were sparks showering down across the width of the stage in the back and you wasn't for sure if the amplifiers were going up in flames or if it was part of the show... I was looking for the nearest exit just in case!

Another trick is they moved to the end of the stage 'island' to be closer to the fans where a 2nd hidden drum kit appeared for a few songs and they handed out beer to some of the fans after they pulled out their card. It was like a party!

We cannot forget the tshirts being shot out of guns into the crowd either! Thanks for giving some back guys! Even if it was at 100 feet per second...

There was quite a bit of cursing, lots of 'f' and 's' words. I did not mind but there were younger kids in the crowd believe it or not. Come on guys... can't you expand your vocab a little?

The large video screens were high quality.

Overall, I would say this was one of the best shows I've ever seen and Nickelback set the bar even higher for other acts to follow with their excellent lighting and pyro! You guys left money on the table and I would buy tickets on your next pass through Columbus!

My washer fills with water when off?

Usually this situation is caused by a failing water valve assembly. I just published a new site at Washer fills with water when off that has some solutions for you.

This can create some problems such as water flowing on the floor depending on how bad the leak is or when it is noticed. I always recommend that you turn off your water supply valves when leaving on vacation in case of a machine or water hose failure.

I would also unplug the power cord as well before you vacation, even if you have a surge suppressor on your washer. I have Maytag Neptune owners who went on vacation and arrived home to a dead Neptune because of a close lightning strike while they were out. You just never know...

Wow, I checked under my fridge and look what I found! How embarrassing!

I immediately grabbed my Dyson vacuum and a fridge coil brush and started cleaning.

It is important to keep your fridge coils clean. Your compressor will thank you and you will save energy as well.

Hi Neptuners!

Does your Neptune front load washer shut down a few seconds after pushing the start button?

If so, it is possible that your Motor Control Board (MCB) has failed.

I just put up a Maytag Neptune Motor Conversion Kit site that has troubleshooting tips on it and if necessary, you can purchase the replacement Motor and MCB. Maytag redesigned both the motor and MCB so they are not compatible with the original parts as they use a different technology on the motor drive system. Most customers comment on how the new motor drive is quieter than the original motor drive. This new motor drive fits all solid door panel Neptune's including the Stackers.

Does your Neptune Sound like a rock tumbler? If so, it is possible one of the three bolts snapped on your spinner support where it bolts to the stainless steel inner tub. In these cases, you can try to get a new stainless steel bolt and nut and see if you can repair it... but if it does not work you can replace your spinner support.

Recycled Maytag Neptune Timer- MAH3000AWW

MAH3000AWW - Serial number starts with 25

Hi Neptuners!

Well, I had a Neptuner that has a bad timer on his MAH3000 due to the wax motors in the soap dispenser shorting out. Below is a link to a recycled Neptune timer which will save you money verses buying a brand new timer which list for about $115.00. This timer should work on all of the MAH3000 Neptune front load washers.

There are 2 contacts that power the bleach and softener wax motors in the soap dispenser. When these original wax motors fail by shorting out it can damage these contacts due the excessive current flowing until the circuit breaker trips.

If you have a Maytag Neptune MAH3000 with a serial starting with 10 thru 25, you need to replace your wax motors before they short out and run the risk of damaging your timer. You can order new 12002535 wax motors from Neptune Help. Don't forget the door latch wax motor, too. Keep in mind that you have 3 wax motors in your MAH3000 with serial number 10 thru 25.

Maytag Neptune Displays ND Code

Q: My Neptune will not drain and the nd service code is in the display. what is this and how can i fix it. Thanks

A: Ahhh, the ND error code on a digital Neptune front load washer. The ND code means 'No Drain' and it is probably just something caught in the pump. I’ve seen where a coin can get in there and keep the pump from starting.

Some other items known to stop a Neptune pump: Rubber backing from a rug, rubber bands, bobbie pin, lens from a flashlight, tooth pick and a bra wire. Maybe you had something different in your pump? If so, please comment with what you discovered in your pump...

If you have a floor drain you should be able to drop the discharge hose to the floor and let gravity pull the water out so you can take the pump out and get a good look at it.

Also a word of advice to avoid wasting time. The pump is usually towards the front of the machine.

Maytag Neptune 6500 burns seal

Another Neptuner needs help... Here is a question from a Neptuner that was pulled from the blogosphere...

Q: Last night, I washed some clothes with two pillows. It seems that the pillows were rubbing against the seal? (The plastic thing next to the door) and now that the seal has a hole. There is great but I will not wash until you know if that is really bad (maybe the water can get in there). Also, I think because of that the washer was making a really loud noise near the end of the cycle.

A: If the bearings are going out you can replace them. See Neptune Bearing for more info. You can also rent a special tool kit, too. Usually, the machine will start to sound like a jet taking off when in the high speed spin cycle.

If you call a tech and the bearings need attention, they will ask for $900 to replace the outer tub, unless they are a tech that owns the Neptune Bearing Tony Tool from Neptune Kits then you might get the bearings replaced for $200 or so.

It is also possible the spinner support has an issue and is causing the inner tub to wobble which can rub the plastic liner. Contact me and I can get you a new spinner support which comes with the new seal.

Maytag Neptune MAH5500AWW Won't Unlock the Door

Here is a recent question about the Maytag Neptune front loader repair...

Q: "I have a Maytag Neptune MAH5500AWW Front Load Washer. A couple years ago I replaced the R11 & Q??, and Wax Motor (with black plunger) to fix a problem in which the spin cycle did not fully run and left the clothes wet. The washer worked without fail until last week. The current problem I am experiencing is that the washer runs through the entire wash cycle, including spin, however, the "on" light and "door lock" light stay on. Door stays locked and the washer stays in a state in which the drum sounds like it spins 1/2 turn every 15 seconds. It never turns off."

A: There are a couple of issues that can cause the wax motor to stay energized after replacing R11 resistor and Q6 triac.

The first cause could be that one of the R11 leads is no longer connected to the Q6 pins #1 and #2. If either lead of R11 becomes disconnected the wax motor will stay energized. If you have an ohmmeter, you can verify that each lead does in fact connect to either pin #1 or pin #2 of the Q6. Note: pin 1 on the Q6 triac is looking at the flat side the very left pin. Pin 2 is center pin and pin three is the far right pin when looking at the flat side. If you flip board over keep in mind the Q6 orientation.

After verifying that the R11 leads are in fact connected... The other cause could be that the Q2 and Q7 transistors need replaced. It is possible these took a 'hit' when the first R11 burnt because AC voltage can be backfed when the Q6 triac shorted out. There is a STAGE 2 kit at the Neptune Help order form where you get the Q2 and Q7 replacements.

Maytag Neptune - Earlier Lip seal tips

Hi Neptuners!

Ok... Let's get something straight... Yes, the Maytag Neptune 12002022 seal kit installation instructions are not very clear. So I will give you some tips on installing the 'earlier' lip seal...

In the 12002022 seal kit there are two seals. The thinner one is the earlier lip design and it has the steel washer embedded into it. On the spinner support, near the three arms, remove the steel washer which is remains from the original seal. If you don't remove it, you will have 2 steel washers on the shaft and when you tighten the new included pulley bolt to 33 ft lbs, the tub will be hard to turn and you will have to pull the inner tub again. If you proceed to run the machine with the 2 steel washers on the spinner support shaft you will damage the new seal.

Since some steel washers will be tight on the shaft due to tolerances, it is a good process to tap the new seal in so it is flush and level to the bearing housing. Tip: I use the old front bearing so I don't deform the steel washer when tapping in. Then pull the steel washer out (split the seal) and place it on the spinner shaft (without flipping it) and work it all the way back to the three arms just like the original one was. Be careful not to disturb the pink grease when working the steel washer back. The split seals will meet up again when you install the inner tub. Make sure that after you torque the new included 9/16" pulley bolt that you can turn the tub by hand fairly easily and hear the liquid sloshing around in the balance ring.

The 'O' ring works only with the revised lip seal. The new replacement spinner supports will come with a special seal kit with the 'revised' seal and "O" ring.

Don't forget that you can rent the Neptune Bearing Tool Kit from Neptune Bearing which includes a 14 minute DVD that shows you the disassembly process, bearing swap and the seal kit installation to save you lots of time on the Neptune bearing job.

I hope this helps get your Neptune back up and spinning again...

Neptune Bearing: Update on MAH8700 bearing and seal kit

Hi Neptuners,

It appears that we have hit a limit on where my Maytag Neptune bearing and seal kit can be used...

I just had a customer who had a MAH8700AWW and he rented the Tony Tool to change his screaming bearings. Well, it turns out that the MAH8700 is completely different from the MAH7500 and below. After looking at the machine's drawings it looks alot like the Kenmore Elite front loaders inside. Guess what? I have a site for Elite Bearings and seal as well.

I plan on putting together a bearing and seal kit for the MAH8700 next and will add it to the site. The drawback is that the Tony Tool rental will not be applicable to this machine.

If you have a Neptune MAH8700 and need bearings and seal please contact me and I will get you set up.

I guess the good news is that the newer Neptunes don't have the faulty 12002535 door latch wax motor anymore...

The first one is where you can get information on snow blowers. With all of the recent heavy snow in Ohio and the Eastern Seaboard I'll bet there is not a snow blower to be had. The main reason is that the Spring Season is just around the corner and the stores do not want to carry snow blowers all year in storage. Expecting Mothers and Maytag Neptune Front Load Washer

Here is an article I recently wrote to inform expecting mothers to be about the faulty door latch wax motor on the Maytag Neptune front load washers. You can probably imagine the laundry that will need washed with a baby in the house and it is critical to keep the washer working!

Congratulations! You're having a baby soon... Before you know it your Maytag Neptune Front Load washer will be working overtime cleaning bibs, blankets, baby outfits, etc. so your washer uptime will be critical. There are some things you should know about your Neptune front load washer.

The most important thing to be aware is that the Maytag Neptunes with a timer knob (non digital) shipped with a faulty door latch wax motor. This small electrical device locks the door during the high speed spin cycle. What happens is that this faulty device eventually shorts out and damages the machine control board.

The good news is that Maytag redesigned this device to correct the failure but you need to replace it before it fails to prevent the machine control board damage. After your machine fails it will not lock the door which means your clothes will be sopping wet at the completion of the wash cycle. More good news... The door latch wax motor is inexpensive and really easy to change. It can be done in 5 -10 minutes. There are videos available that show how to inspect wax motor and replace it.

Luckily, Maytag made it easy to tell which wax motor you have by the color of the actuator pin that sticks out of the device. If the pin color matches the body color then you have the faulty design. You want the wax motor with the black color pin which is the redesigned component. If you bother the repairman after this failure they will probably quote you $450 to fix your machine. I recommend that you proactively replace your door latch wax motor before it damages your machine control board.

The next thing to be aware of is your bearings. When you first put your Neptune in service you were probably impressed with how quiet the machine is... That is the way it is supposed to be. When your bearings start to fail the machine will get loud in the spin cycle. It will sound like a jet taking off when ramping up to 850 rpm. You should be concerned and not ignore it. You can replace your bearings yourself. If you bother the repairman they will want $900+ to replace your large plastic outer tub. But you don't need to replace the expensive $450 tub... Just replace the bearings and seal. There is a special Neptune bearing tool kit available you can rent that includes an instructional DVD that shows you step-by-step how to disassemble your Neptune, replace bearings using tool, and install the new seal.

The sooner you replace your bearings once you notice the machine getting louder in spin cycle the better. I would even recommend that if your machine has made it to the 10 year mark that you replace the bearings proactively. The Neptune front loader is a workhorse but it does have some design issues you need to be aware of to keep it running efficiently for years to come.

How To Repair Electronic Components

Hi Neptuners!

Recently, I had a chance to go through some email responses I received from you after you repaired your Maytag Neptune washer.

I can't believe how many successful machine control board repairs you have completed since I have been offering the Q6 R11 repair kits. You of all people... because most of you have never soldered before! That is crazy! I know someone would have said "that can't be done.. you can't have homeowners soldering on their Maytag Neptune control board...". Boy, am I glad I did not listen to them! Looking in Quickbooks I have sold over 4,300 wax motors!

I then got to thinking that I don't know how many times I've taken a broken electronic device apart and repaired it. I like to see if I can fix it before pitching it... Some devices had a broken wire or lead. Some devices I did not find anything but they worked when I reassembled them?

Slightly off topic today with portable Generators

Hi Neptuners!

It seems that we rely on our homes to be energized with electricity to run all sorts of time and labor saving devices.

What happens when your power line is severed during an ice storm or a car collides with a utility pole?

I asked myself the same question and decided to be prepared. I recently purchased a propane generator. Actually, it was a Christmas gift for myself. ;-) It is a 3,500 watt model, single phase 120 VAC. I figure it will run the furnace (natural gas), fridge, freezer, sump pump and some lighting. It uses the standard grill type propane tanks and should run about 9 hours at half load.

Once I received it... I filled the oil (.6 qt.) up and hooked up the propane tank and fired it up. I was impressed with how quiet it was. How useful is a generator just sitting there? Not very... I also purchased a 30 amp, 120 VAC inlet box, 10 ft. 10-3 generator hook up cable, the Square D breaker panel generator interlock kit, 30amp 2 pole breaker, 15/15 tandom breaker, 10 ft. 10-2 w/gnd romex wire and misc. hardware.

I plan to install all of the components during my holiday break until Jan 4th! I will shoot some video for you to see like I did for the DVD duplicator I purchased last month. The DVD duplicator has produced about 50 mini DVDs, 35 CD's and so far has done a great job for me so if you need to do some CD or DVD duplication check out the DVD Duplicator site I put up.

DupliQ CD DVD Duplicator is pretty clever

DupliQ CD DVD Duplicator - I just purchased one of these and I was impressed with its simple operation. I was looking for a duplicator that can burn the mini 8cm DVD-R's. It looks like I found it! This device is made by Acronova Technology Inc.

I was going to upload a demonstration video but the Blogger 100 meg limit won't support it.

I have the video at DVD Duplicator where you can watch this clever machine in action...

The reason: I put together a new video for my Neptune Bearing kit purchasers that shows them how to disassemble their Neptune Front Load washers to expose the outer tub. I felt bad because the Tony Tool renters get the famous Tony Tool video that shows Shirley taking apart her Neptune and replacing the bearings and seal. So, I decided it was time that the folks who purchase the Maytag Neptune Bearing and Seal kit get to watch a disassembly DVD as well.

There are basically two types of CD DVD duplicators. You have the stand alone (manual disc load) version where you have a tower with a controller and a number of CD DVD drives. The second is the Host type where the PC runs the duplicator via software and the USB 2.0 interface. The DupliQ is the Host type which is fine with me because my PC stays on most of the time anyway. I wanted to set it and forget it for totally automatic operation. The stand alone duplicators need you to remove and load the discs manually... Not!

Besides, I could not find any stand alone duplicators that support the mini 8cm DVD-R media. I needed this format because it will fit into my bearing kit shipping box where the 12cm DVD would not. Another plus, it adds very little weight to keep the bearing kit under 2 pounds via Priority Mail. Yes!

If you have a need to create CD's or DVD's then check this duplicator out. I also read that there is a way to use this device to automatically rip Cd's into Windows Media Player using free software. You just keep the hopper full of CD's you want to rip. The article writer mentioned he ripped 1,700 CD's in one month using the DupliQ. I know folks that have huge music libraries that could use this cool benefit.

Maytag Neptune Bearing Question from the blogosphere

Here is a Question I received from a future customer and I noticed he also asked one of the online appliance repair forums and I wanted to share the forum's response to his question...

"Neptune MAH4000AWW "disintegrated" bearing"

10 year old washer was making a lot of noise and I told my wife to just close the laundry room door and ignore it. Wish I'd done some research before I've gotten to where I am. The unit finally failed about 2 weeks ago.

When I took off the front/top I found the belt laying in the bottom of the unit, it looked warn & stretched & warped so I thought "OK, I'll just buy a new belt and put it on". Ordered a new belt from RepairClinic.com and when it arrived I took the back access off and discovered pieces of the disintegrated rear bearing laying in the brown muck covering the inside bottom of the washer

So now I'm considering an attempt at bearing replacement using instructions from the web (maybe renting the patent pending neptune bearing tool I came across). I've already got the PDF of the repair manual and it has been helpful, except the part about the bearings not being replaceable.

My questions...

1) When the bearing failed the spin basket dropped and the drive pulley carved some groves in the back of the outer tub. I thought a fiber glass /epoxy repair kit would take care of that problem. There are 5 places that are grooved, one near the top completely penetrated the outer tub (about a 2 mm hole), one at the top on the opposite side is almost penetrated and the other three are minor scratches that I probably won't touch. There is also some wear front shroud assembly where the spin basket scraped on it when it dropped while spinning, but it does not look like significant damage. Is attempting a repair on this a good idea? Or should I bite the bullet and buy the entire outer tub with bearings for $475?

2) I purchased a new drain pump when I ordered the belt, because I read that the newer 80 watt pumps are quieter than the old 40 watt pumps. And it's 10 years old. Now that I've got it apart I'm also wondering about the recirculation pump. Or do I return the new (unopened) drain pump and just clean up the old ones?

3) From my research I'm definitely replacing the door locking wax motor. I have the "brown" kind and I guess I've been lucky so far! Thinking about putting a fuse in line with the wax motor to protect the control board based on some instructions I found on the web. Is fusing the wax motor a good idea or pointless with the newer wax motor?

4) As long as I have the unit this far apart are there any other parts I should consider replacing? I'm wondering about struts, springs, hoses, etc. What wears out after 10 years?

5) I'm also buying my wife a new dispenser assembly bottom for $18 because the old one is very rusty from our bad water.

6) Or is it just time for a new washer

The boot was replaced several years ago with the draining type under warranty after the class action lawsuit.

Overall I would have to say that this washer is nice to work on, things are fairly accessible. I'm not an appliance repair person, just a handy person who tries to figure things out. I don't mind putting in the time to do the work. I'm just debating how much money to invest in parts. I'm at $90 now and I just hope another $150 and 3-4 hours of work will get the washer to "near new" condition. Really don't want to buy a new outer tub if I can avoid it.

"Yes, you would need the outer tub assembly, at almost $500, its not worth fixing, you can buy a brand new Frigidaire front-loader for about $650.

These Maytag Neptune's had so many problems its not even funny. If I were in your shoes I wouldn't waste my time or money on your Neptune, unless you want an endless money pit."

My Response:
There we go again... Jake, another technician whining about how 'bad' the Neptunes are...

I get tired of these techs spewing negative things about the Neptune front load washers. Besides, I thought their lively hood depended on making appliance repairs so why would they complain about Maytag failures? It has really helped my business grow in the last 4 years. ;-)

As a matter of fact, my Neptune parts side business has grown too much for me and I am putting it up for sale at Website Properties.

Yea, the Neptunes had some design issues but they are solid machines once these issues are corrected. Maytag was the first residential front load so you can expect some design issues on a product of this complexity. The issues can be corrected easily, too. I think the issue most Neptune owners have is that Maytag did not stand by their product as well as they should have when the design issues started to surface.

What were those design issues? The door latch wax motor ($20), the door boot mold issue ($64), the motor / motor control board reliability ($174) and now the bearings ($79 or $155 with Tony tool rental). The Neptune timers are very reliable as I have not sold one in 4 years. The door boots do smell moldy but my 8 month old Kenmore Elite HE3T smells moldy after a few days of sitting?

As for the motor control board reliability, I recommend a good surge suppressor and you wait until it fails. You can replace it for $174 at Neptune Help. It takes about an hour to install.

Let’s talk about the new Whirlpools with the rotting spinners… I’ve yet to see a Neptune spinner support rot out. You know why? They are made from the more expensive stainless steel vs. the cheap alloy that Whirlpool uses. Here is an article on the rotting spinners.

Let’s talk about the new Kenmore Elites HE3 and HE3T’s that need bearings and seals after only 3 years… See Elite Bearing for replacement HE3 and HE3T bearings and seal kits. Guess who makes the Kenmore Elites? Whirlpool.

The appliance techs I’ve talked to recently say the new front load machines don’t address the bearing and seal issues enough. I guess water and bearings don’t mix? Maybe the washer Engineers should focus on the bearing / seal reliability issues instead of adding steam, faster spin cycles, etc.

Presently, I have non-technicians starting side businesses repairing Neptune bearings (with the Tony Tool) from placing ads in craigslist and local newspapers charging $200 instead of the $900 to $1,000 that is quoted for fixing the Neptune bearings. Another person is purchasing the returned Neptunes when people buy a new washer and dryer set from box stores for $12.50 each and rebuilding them for resale. He says he can’t keep the Neptune Stackers in stock because customers love these. I’m thinking about starting a new Neptune service army made up of local people who can repair Neptunes… Who knows maybe we can put the whining service tech’s out of a job?

It looks like Jake did not like being called a Neptune whiner.... I guess I could have said complainer instead? I apologize for that. I received the same email from this customer and actually suggested this customer try to patch the outer tub because I know folks who have successfully patched their outer tub... It is obvious he was willing to do the repair and with the Tony Tool rental he could replace his bearings and seal. By the way, I do have an engineering (not technician) background so I believe in finding solutions to problems.

Jake also brought up the Neptune recall as evidence that Neptunes are not worthy machines? I see where Frigidare just recalled new machines in July, 2009, due to fire hazard? And Jake recommended this guy buy a Frigidaire for $650... By the way, Jake must not be married because the wife will want a new matching dryer, too! So the $650 just doubled... And she will want the largest washer for the comforters so the basic Frigidaire will be too small... Look to spend $2K for a decent front load set.

Back to this guy's Neptune... It seems most of this damage could have been prevented if the washer was not forced to keep operating when he knew something was wrong as he said he told his wife to close the laundry door and ignore it.

When it is all said and done... I would rather repair a machine with a few known problems then shell out $2K for a decent new front loader set where I will get to discover all of the new problems...

I just finished a new video that shows how to replace the door latch wax motor in the maytag neptune door latch. Here is the Neptune Wax Motor Video link.

If you have a Maytag Neptune front loader with a timer knob you will want to inspect your wax motor and make sure it has a black actuator pin. If it has the brownish color actuator pin then you will want to replace it as soon as possible.

Keep in mind that if you have a MAH3000 model with the serial number starting with a 10 thru 25 then you will have two more wax motors in the soap dispenser. These control the bleach and softener flows.

Kenmore Elite - Do these front loaders have bearing issues too?

I have been offering Maytag Neptune owner's the bearing and seal kits for about 2 years now at Neptune Bearing.

Recently, I had emails from 2 Elite owners that needed bearings. One was for an HE3 machine that was 3 years old and the second was an HE2 model. Does anyone build a washing machine that will last? I have an Elite HE3 and it is still working... (Knock on wood)

You can also replace the outer tub as these are not too expensive yet because they are still in production. But once they are out of production the price will go up considerably just like the Maytag Neptune outer tub has.

I realize that when you have your Neptune torn apart while performing the bearing change you don't want to wait until the new spacer arrives via Priority Mail... If you discover your original spacer is cracked or too corroded just use the included one. If you don't need to use it simply send it back with the tool rental.

IRS Warning Emails and other computer hazzards...

Hi Neptuners,

You know better than to click on links in unexpected emails.... right?

If the IRS sends you an email don't click on the link... I recieved an email today and if you click on it you will be whisked away to a site that will undoubtedly feed your computer a virus or trojan.

And a reminder – it is best to avoid opening .zip files you receive in emails. A lot of times these will appear to come from UPS, DHL or FedEx with a note about a package that could not be delivered. The .zip file contains an executable attachment which will infect your PC. Companies will not send notices to customers in .zip files.

Finally, and most important (and thus, in bold and in red) – if you go to a website or click a link or open an attachment (or you’re just sitting there minding your own business) and a notice pops up on your screen that says something like “Warning! Your computer is infected” – it might be accompanied by an animation showing a scan and an increasing number of threats – DON’T CLICK ANYTHING. Clicking the graphic may download malware to your PC (even clicking the X that typically shuts down a window).

Things you can do are:

· Press and hold the ALT button and tap F4 to close all open windows until the computer shuts down. (You’ll hold the ALT button down the whole time.)

· If you know pressing your power button briefly shuts your PC off, you can do that instead. (Sometimes this puts a computer into hibernation mode – typically, in computers that came with XP or newer installed, its shuts them down.)

· If the network cable is easy to get to you could unplug it before the ALT-F4 step.

· If the ALT-F4 and power button items don’t work, press the power button in until the computer shuts down.

Maytag Neptune Front Load question - Water still in tub

Maytag Neptune Front load - Here is a question I get a lot:

Q: I have a Maytag Neptune that doesn't drain. It spins the water out of the clothes but the bottom of the machine has enough water in it that you can hear it when you turn the drum.

A: Perhaps it is draining after all... The water you hear when you turn the inner tub is the balance ring which has liquid in it and it is part of the balancing system on the Neptunes.

Now, if there is physically water visible in the inner tub then the pump is not getting all of the water out and it needs to be investigated. There are a number of issues that can cause this. One is a clogged tub drain or tub drain hose that feeds the pump. It could also be that the pump has debris in it or the drain hose in the back of machine is kinked...

Whatever the reason it needs to be corrected or the Neptune tub bearings will not last long. The reason is because the tub seal is not designed to work against the water slinging in the tub during spin cycle. Once water get passed the seal it will get into the bearings and cause the lubrication to break down. The next thing you will notice is that the your Neptune will get louder in spin cycle where it sounds like a jet plane taking off. At this point you will want to replace the bearings and 12002022 seal kit. You can do it yourself and save lots of money.

Maytag Neptune Washer - Bearing Spacer Question:

I've been asked a few times lately regarding the installation of the new bearing spacer so I wanted to post the answer here. If you will look at the picture you will notice one end of the spacer is flat and the other end has a slight bevel.

I am not aware of any particular orientation when you install the spacer. Until I know otherwise, just install it either way.

If you have a Maytag Neptune front load washer check out Maytag Neptune Bearing for replacement bearings and the 12002022 seal kit. When you notice your Neptune getting loud in the high speed spin cycle is when it is time to change your bearings. You don't want to wait too long to change them because the bearings will eventually fall apart and that will make it more difficult to get them out of there.

Cracked Glass Cooktop Website Updated

Hi Neptuners,

Some of you may be aware that I offer replacement glass cook tops for most ranges and cook tops.

In the past, I required folks to email me via a form that asks for name, phone, model, serial, etc. and I would take the information and look up the glass cook top to see if I could provide a replacement. I would then send an email with the price quote, etc.

I just re worked the www.crackedglasscooktop.com site and added a model number entry box at the bottom of the page where you can enter your model number directly and it will take you to another page where all of the parts to your range will be displayed with prices. This way the process is instant plus it takes me out of the loop.

Another important fact is you can look up any appliance parts such as your fridge, range, dish washer, etc. What convenience?

Maytag Neptune Bearing - I Shipped A Tony Tool to Canada

Maytag Neptune Bearing Update - I just shipped my first Tony Tool rental kit to Canada via UPS Ground. The location I shipped it to was Glen Huron, Ontario Canada.

It is no surprise because there is a large number of Maytag Neptune owners in Canada that I have sold the Q6 & R11 repair kits to. I have received a number of tool rental requests but I declined to ship the tools to Canada for a number of reasons...

1. The UPS Ground shipping time will be greater than the Flat Rate Priority Mail I use for the domestic orders which ties up the tool for longer. It weighed 15 pounds which tells me David is getting the solid steel knock out plug...

2. Customs - Getting the tools through customs was concerning because these were rental and we should not have to pay duty on them when you declare the value of $425.00.

3. I also included a bearing spacer just in case David's spacer is damaged or corroded.

4. DVD - I don't know if the Tony Tool DVD will play in Canadian players because DVDs have a country code.

5. Shipping expense - The UPS Ground shipping expense was about $35.00 USD Verses $15.55 for Flat Rate Priority Mail shipping in the States. I will have to hold back more of the refund to cover the additional shipping expense to Canada or get a higher deposit up front.

To rap it up... Before we get excited about renting the Neptune Bearing Tony Tool to Neptune owners in Canada let's see what happens with David's Neptune and see if I get the tool back from Customs, etc.

Maytag neptune bearing information - The Maytag Neptune Bearing Tony Tool has been improved!

Could this be a dumb bell?

I believe it could be! But more importantly... The original PVC knockout plug has been upgraded to solid steel!
The biggest issue with the Tony Tool has been the PVC Knockout plug because it would crack near the top lip and folks who rented the tool kit at www.neptunebearing.com would call or email me apologizing and offering to buy a new one. I would just explain to them that it was not an issue and don't worry about it.

I just figured that you Neptune owners were taking your frustrations out on the knock out plug like a stress relieving squeeze toy. But no, Tony mentioned that his personal PVC knock out plug was cracked too and that it still worked great for getting the front bearing out. Tony decided that it was time to improve his Neptune bearing tool kit.

By the way, the latest three Tony Tools I added to my rental fleet have the new solid steel knock out plug. When you rent the tony tool you may or may not get the steel knock out plug.

front load washers - Maytag Neptune Update

Front load washers are here to stay! Do you own an earlier Maytag Neptune front loader? If so, you need to be aware of some reliability issues.

First, the door latch wax motor is probably the most problematic component on the Neptune. The original devices short out over time and burn the R11 resistor and the Q6 triac on the machine control board. You can prevent your R11 & Q6 failure by proactively replacing your faulty door latch wax motor. The part number is 12002535 and you can purchase the new replacement at http://www.neptunehelp.com/.

If you have a MAH3000 Neptune, you could have 3 wax motors in there waiting to fail... The soap dispenser on the earlier MAH3000's have 2 wax motors that control the bleach and softener flow and should be replaced.

The original wax motors have the brownish color actuator pin and the new design has the black pin.

Maytag Washer Update - Fatal Friday for Analog TV

Hi Neptuners,

Well, the time has come to kill the analog tv signal...

Friday, June 12th is the last day for the analog television broadcasting and you can bet that there will be confusion when folks' non-digital tvs won't work anymore. If you remember, we were going to lose the analog signal back in February, 2009 but the government decided to extend the switch off for 4 more months due to folks not being prepared for the switch over.

At least until they purchase the digital tv converter box which will receive the digital transmission and converter it to channel 3 or 4 like the VCRs and DVD players do. You can get a coupon for $40 off which makes the box like $10.00.

Can you remember back when color tv sets were added... At least your black and white set still worked with the new color signal because the engineers made them compatible without upgrading the black and white receivers. With the new digital transition, it was impossible to make an analog tv receive and decode the digital signals without any hardware upgrades. The low-cost converter box was the only solution.

Otherwise, if you have a cable box then you will be good to go and probably are enjoying the digital tv already.

I am ready to give a few hints as to who creates these songs for me. His name is Mark H. and he resides in Ohio. I will be honest with you... I can't sing or even play an instrument if my life depended on it! I will stick to helping you Neptuners save money on your Neptune repairs...

It reminds me when my wife wants something fixed pronto around the house if you know what I mean.

I gave Mark the go ahead for a third Neptune song but you will have to wait for that announcement.

I was recently brainstorming with Mark about some services he could provide and we came up with:

Music/songs for photo albums, presentations, websites, tv/radio commercials, answering machine announcements, etc. There is a lot of potential here!

On a different note... Chelsie, my daughter was just given a DVD for her first grade class that has photos of all the students in her class throughout the whole school year. When they watched it at school she said the whole class was in tears! I was thinking... right! Well, we played it again at home and she and Andy (my 4 year old) started crying their eyes out! I wanted to make a video of them two crying watching her first grade class photo DVD... I thought it was a great idea and today anyone can create a decent DVD for well under a buck. If any of you would like DVD creation tips please email me and I will help you out.

Fleetwood Mac in Columbus - It was a great concert!

Hi Neptuners,

I would not say that I am a die hard F.M. fan but I really enjoyed the show last night. Those folks can still shake the rafters and sound good while doing it! We were in section 102, row Y at the Nationwide Arena among a full house of fans. We must have been in front of a bank of speakers because the decibels were really cranking.

I have to say that Lindsey Buckingham's pickless style of guitar playing was really impressive... I wonder if he would help on my third Neptune song? Hold on... Let's publish the second Neptune song first! Lindsey broke out and really played some great solo guitar sometimes banging on the guitar and looked like he was very pleased after the song was finished from the expressions on his face.

Let's say mick fleetwood can really play the drums as I was looking forward to the Tusk song which has a unique drum pattern. I did not realize how well Mick could play as I am not a avid fan of F.M. It was great to see Stevie Nicks live for the first time, too! I've seen her in videos but never live. Stevie was awesome! She has a unique flowing way about her while she is performing? Watching her eyes makes you wonder if she is really there but she sounded great. Someone in the front row area was trying to hand her a bouquet of flowers during the whole show. Finally, Lindsey picked them up and handed them to Stevie towards the end of the show.

I took a vacation recently to New Smyrna Beach Florida

Hi Neptuners!

I just got back from vacation Tuesday morning where I enjoyed a week in Florida. We stayed at the http://www.thepelican.com/, a two bedroom condo on New Smryna Beach. It was in the 80's when we arrived on Sunday, April 5th :>). My wife's uncle owns a condo there and ours was next to his. We had a great time! All of the balconies face the beach and ocean for a great view.

We also visited the http://www.ponceinlet.org/ Ponce Inlet Lighthouse on Wednesday. It was a nice site to visit and we climbled the 203 steps to the top. It was very windy that day.

Of course, we took the 2 little ones and my in-laws to the Disney Magic Kingdom on Thursday and boy was it busy! We stayed until 10:00 pm and had to drive 1.5 hours back to the condo afterwards. The admission total was about $455 for all 6 of us... WoW!

Here I am with my little ones and in-laws...

In addition, I spent alot of beach and pool time in the sun Friday, Saturday and Sunday and yes I used lots of sunscreen... We also drove on the beach in our Town & Country van. I saw a couple of cars get stuck in the sand in front of our condo so I was concerned about the van getting stuck but we did'nt get stuck. The kids had a ball driving up and down the beach with the side doors open!

Bummer, I got a $101.00 citiation, too :>( .... I'm innocent I tell ya!

No, it was not for speeding. I will explain in a later post.

Space Station and Maytag Neptunes are Threatened by Orbital Debris

Hi Neptuners!

You’ve probably heard about the near miss with the International Space Station (ISS) recently.

Did you know that your Maytag Neptune front load washer is also threatened by orbital debris?

The orbital debris I’m talking about is mostly coins… If you have change in your pockets when you wash your clothes your water pump can come to a quick halt or be unable to start up on the next pumping cycle. The problem with the first scenario is that the pump impeller could be damaged when it abruptly stops and will probably need replaced. The second scenario can be corrected by draining the water, removing the pump, disassembling and cleaning the pump then reinstalling the pump. Note: If you have a floor drain near your Neptune you can simply lay the drain hose down on the floor and the water should drain out thanks to gravity.

In addition, even innocent lint buildup overtime can clog your water pump so it is a good idea to remove and clean out once and a while your water pump during your spring cleaning chores after your Neptune is 5-10 years old.

Flush prescription drugs down the toilet only if the label or accompanying patient information specifically instructs doing so.

Take advantage of community pharmaceutical take-back programs that allow the public to bring unused drugs to a central location for proper disposal. Some communities have pharmaceutical take-back programs or community solid-waste programs that allow the public to bring unused drugs to a central location for proper disposal. Where these exist, they are a good way to dispose of unused pharmaceuticals.

I have a Maytag front load Neptune MAH5500BWW problem

Q: Hi. I have the MAH5500B washing machine. My wife called in a panic and said the LCD panel displayed the LR code.

I read 120V ac at the receptacle.
I read 120V ac at terminals 1 and 3 on connector P6 at the machine control panel.

I ran the Quick Service Cycle and everything seems to function except the tub does not spin.

Checking across the 10 amp fuse on the motor control board yields 1 ohm resistance. I am thinking motor but I am not sure...any ideas?

A: Sure. You will have to replace the Motor control board and the motor with the new Maytag 12002039 motor conversion kit which is available at http://www.neptunehelp.com/index_files/Page667.htm. It ships UPS Ground and takes about an hour to install.

The original motor control boards have a high failure rate on the Neptunes so Maytag decided to redesign both the motor and motor control board.

Have you noticed your Neptune getting loud in spin cycle? If so, then your bearings are failing and will need to be replaced. The extra friction caused by the failing bearings can cause the motor control board to shutdown and/or fail. You can get new bearings and 12002022 seal kit from www.neptunebearing.com. Q: My Maytag Neptune quit mid-cycle. Trips circuit breaker every time plugged in. Is there a bypass to drain tub and open door? This seems like a catastrophic direct short. Should I wait a week for repairman or would it likely be more cost effective to buy new.

A: If you have an earlier MAH3000 Neptune then this more than likely is caused by a faulty wax motor in the soap dispenser. There are (2) 12002535 wax motors in there that control the bleach and softener flows. These wax motors are controlled directly from the timer.

You will need to rotate the timer to a different position, perhaps to a spin cycle, so the contacts to the faulty wax motor will open and the water pump should kick on and drain the water out. The water pump is also controlled by a set of contacts in the Neptune timer.

Maytag Neptune help... This ain't Ole Lonely?

This is not Ole Lonely working on his Maytag Neptune MAH3000...

Actually, Mark, a Neptuner out in California, decided to take matters into his own hands and replace his door latch wax motor (12002535) and repair his machine control board. The Q6 triac and R11 resistor burnt because of the defective wax motor. By the way the typical Ole Lonely quote is $450 to replace the control board and wax motor!

In addition, every Neptune front loader that shipped with the wax motor will fail. If you know anyone who has a Neptune front loader please tell them.

Maytag Neptune Front Loader Washer Wax Motor Question

Here is another Maytag Neptune question I received today...

Q: Hi, I have a MAH7500AWQ that the motor stopped working. I need the motor upgrade kit (motor & control board) and as a precaution I wanted to put a fuse in the Wax motor circuit (protect the board) and get a new wax motor for when the one I have dies. What do you suggest?

A: Hello, I would suggest that you don't have to worry about the door latch wax motor because your Neptune does not have one... In addition, I don't recommend making any changes to any appliance in the name of safety. If the Engineers felt that the door latch wax motor needed a fuse they would have put one in the circuit. I'm sure that when the Neptune was on the drawing board they did not foresee a design problem with the wax motor.

The models affected by the faulty wax motor are the MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5500A and the 2000 Stackers. If you know anyone with a Neptune front loader please rush them to this blog or the www.neptunehelp.com site so they can replace it before it fails.

If your machine won’t spin because the door locked light doesn’t come on and you have one of the affected models listed above then you probably have become a victim of the Maytag Neptune Wax Motor Meltdown. Note: I highly recommend that you don’t keep trying to start your Neptune because you can damage the lower motor control board as well.

Listen, you have 2 options… 1) Replace the machine control and the wax motor at http://neptunehelp.com/index_files/Page667.htm or, 2) purchase the STAGE 1 repair kit with wax motor and see if your Neptune will come to life. About 45 out of 50 boards work without a problem. Occasionally, I get folks whose boards refuse to fill with water which have to be replaced because they suffered more damage… maybe they did not heed my warning about trying to keep starting up machine? Look, you would have had to replace the control board anyway…

When ordering your control board, it depends on your model and serial number as to which board you need. The simplest replacement is the MAH4000 and the MAH5500A Neptunes as these both use the 22002989 control board. The MAH3000 has two different control boards based on the model suffix and 1st two digits of serial number. Here is a breakdown:

MAH3000AWW - (10-16) 12001725 or (17 - present) 22002988
MAH3000AWA - (10-16) 12001725 or (17 - present) 22002988
MAH3000AWQ - (10 - present) 22002988
MAH3000AKW - (10 - present) 22002988
MAH3000AAW - (10 - present) 22002917
MAH3000AEW - (10 - present) 22002917
MAH3000AGW - (10 - present) 22002917
MAH3000BGW - (10 - present) 22002917 (50 hertz)

Note: I just checked and I don't see any 22002917 control boards in stock...

Maytag Neptune Front Loader Washer Mold Question

Here is another blogosphere question that an unhappy Neptune owner had made recently...

Q: I have a maytag neptune front loading washer and there is mold on the front seal. I tried to get it off with bleach etc to no avail. Does Maytag have a replacement part I can get (that works better than the old one). The appliance is only 3 years old.... needless to say between the digital display I had to replace on the dryer and this issue. And the new rattling in the 3 year old dryer.. I am done with Whirlpool/maytag/ and product they build. I have a problem with my whirlpool fridge also...Their products are garbage and I would tell ANYONE to STAY AWAY !!!!

A: Yes, you can replace the door boot. The part number is 12002533 and it is available at http://neptunehelp.com/index_files/Page667.htm . In addition, if you have a MAH3000 you can add a drain hose to the new boot. That way the water in the boot pocket can drain after every wash cycle which should help reduce the mold colony potential. Note: Some earlier MAH4000's also were shipped without the drain hose kit.

You actually drill out the center of the nipple which allows the water to drain back into the outer tub.

As for the quality of some manufactures you listed above... I occasionally do searches on the Internet for other front loaders and I see folks who have problems with other manufacturers, too. Let's face it... Our appliances work very hard and there are a lot of environmental factors that play into how long your machine will last that is really beyond the control of any product manufacturer.

I know... The grass is always greener on the other side... but the fact is you own a Maytag Neptune and the good news is that the issues are posted on my blog over time and they are what they are. The three main issues of the earlier Neptunes are the door latch wax motor, moldy door boot and the motor/ motor control board combo reliability.

I will now add a forth issue to the list and it is a wear issue and that is the bearings. Unfortunately, Maytag does not have part numbers assigned to the bearings so service technicians are going to leave you a $900 quote to fix your Neptune bearings. They will want to transplant the whole outer tub which runs about $450 by itself! Fight back and replace your bearings yourself with the help of http://www.neptunebearing.com/page4.html. If Shirley in the DVD can do it... so can you!

You can even rent the tonytool which really reduces the time you are replacing the bearings and there is an awesome DVD that shows you how to take the Neptune apart, replace bearings and install the seal kit. The bearing failure victim in the DVD is the standalone Neptune but the stacker bearing job is not that much different.

Once these four issues are taken care of you will be the proud owner of a happier Neptune front loader!

Hi Neptuners,

Here is a problem a Neptune owner had in the blogosphere yesterday,

Q: "I have this washer that it would not spin. I put in the Maytag Neptune Washer R11 and Q6 kit and a new wax motor. I got the machine to spin. but I do not think it went up to a full speed.

Now after I put it all back together and went to do a load of laundery the washer will not FILL there is no 120 voltage to eather hot or cold valves. If you turn the timer you can get it to spit water out if the valve. If you put the timer in the normal cycle , the timer will advance with out pushing the start button. Then it will stop when it gets to the first Rinse cycle then it stop. I can get 120 voltage to the bleach water valve.

The door lock light will not come on and it will not spin now. I thought I heard a small pop? So is the upper control board bad and a long with the timer ? please email me back Thanks. "

A. "The timer should be fine--- it gets the power from the board, that upper machine control board is deffinately bad unfortunately-- you will need to replace it, it runs about 220 dollars.Here is a place you can order the control board from if you like."

I hope this was not one of my customers that purchased the R11 and Q6 (Stage 1) and did not ask me about the machine's operation after the R11 & Q6 surgery. Yes, a few control boards out of 100 will have to be replaced even after performing the R11 & Q6 replacement because more damaged was done to the control board.

The other thing I would like to mention is that I offer replacement control boards for folks who purchase my Neptune no spin repair kit and the repair does not work for only $159.00! Certain serial numbers are only affected and there is a box where you can enter your country, model and serial to see if your Neptune has the recall.

The issue is a potential fire hazard if water drips onto a thermal sensor connector. Please check it out if you own a MAH8700 or a MAH9700 Neptune.

If you own a MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5500A or a 2000 stacker Neptune please check http://www.neptunehelp.com/ to see if your Neptune has the defective door latch wax motor which will eventually short out and damage the control board. You can proactively replace this component and prevent the control board failure.

Here is another bearing question I received regarding the Maytag Neptune bearing kit...

Q: "Will the Maytag bearing and seal kit that you are selling work on all Maytag Neptunes? I have the MAH6500AWQ that sounds like a jet engine. I have also read that if you change the bearings you should also change the shaft...is that correct? If so do you have the shaft for the Neptune as well?"

A: Yes, the bearing and seal kit will work with all Maytag Neptune front loaders. Presently, the common residential models are the MAH3000, MAH4000, MAH5500, MAH6500 and the 2000 stackers. The reason is that these machines have been in service for at least 4 years.

The shaft is called the spinner support and you don't have to change it if it is not damaged. I have only sold a couple of the spinner supports in the last year. One failed when the tub came to a screeching halt due to the seal and bearing failure and the second spinner support just failed (one arm bolt rusted out causing tub to wobble and trip inertia/balance sensors) but the customer decided to go ahead and replace the bearings and seal since he had to take it apart to replace the spinner. The last time I shipped a spinner support it was $95 including UPS Ground shipping.

The Neptune bearing and Maytag 12002022 seal kit can be purchased from http://www.neptunebearing.com/ and you should look into taking advantage of the tonytool rental program to save you time on the bearing and seal change plus it includes use of the DVD which Tony and Shirley show you how to disassemble your Neptune, replace bearings and install the new seal kit in about 14 minutes.

We find that Laundromats can have a large number of Neptune front loaders and they can save considerable amount of money replacing their bearings instead of replacing the large expensive outer tub.
