How to easily diagnose and repair a faulty gas-fired water
heater when the burner lights and then goes out. In this case it was the flame rod
causing the issue because the control module was not getting the flame rod signal
so it cuts off the gas valve. It will retry for three times then lock out until
control module is reset. We cleaned flame rod with a blue sponge with scrubbing
side and it worked for a few weeks. This trick could keep your hot water flowing
until your replacement ignitor/flame rod arrives… Once it quit working again we
knew the ignitor/flame rod assembly needed replaced. We also cleaned the air
intake vents, inspected for any water leaks and there was none.
This model is a higher efficiency model because it does not
have a pilot light but it does have an inducer fan with plastic exhaust pipe
because it utilizes more of the generated heat to actually heat the water and transmits
less heat out of the stack. The drawback is that it plugs into a 120VAC outlet
to power the control module and inducer fan which is rather loud in my opinion
when it is running. The other weakness is that during a power failure you could
run out of hot water. The water heater in this video is the A.O. Smith 50
gallon: Model GPSH 50 100.
